Deathstars nasceu em Janeiro de 2000 como uma nova versão da banda de heavy metal Swordmaster, criada em 1993. Deathstars contava então com o baterista Ole Öhman (Dissection), os guitarristas Emil Nodtveidt (Nightmare Industries) e Erik Halvorsen (Beast X Electric) e com o vocalista Andreas Bergh. Esta formação gravou, em 2002, o álbum Synthetic Generation.
